I have always loved going to the flea market. Out-of-doors flea markets are my absolute favorite, but I like all different kinds. It appears like my fascination goes back to when I was a child. We used to beg my mom to get to go to this one flea market down-town. You see, there was mechanical horse that you could ride for only a penny! My folks would give us 20 cents each & let's go at it til we got bored. Then we would wander around, looking at antique jewelry, old photographs, strange arts & crafts, & all manner of other various goods like plus size coats. We would not ever look at anything practical '" that was what my mom and father were there for. For us, fleamarkets were an exercise in the talent of our imaginations. We would try and think of weird things we could look for & attempt to find them. Not ordinary things like plus size coats, but really unique items. Even though we rarely found what we were searching for, usually there was something great that shocked us.
As I've gotten older, I've seen a more practical use for The fleamarket. For children, flea markets are a place to run wild, & exotic and old-time fair specializing only in rare & sought-after treasures, but for an adult they're some-thing different: places to get quality goods like plus size coats at discount costs. Unfortunately, all of the flea markets around here stink. To be honest, I haven't seen a good out-of-doors market since I moved to this part of Tennessee. You would think that such a rural community would have antique stores, discount markets, and other spots where people could exchange used goods and make a tad of money off their second hands, but apparently the trend has escaped this particular county.
To some degree, the Internet has helped to make-up for the lack of flea market in the area. If I wish to find discount electronics, low priced cookware, or even remaindered garments, I can get it on eBay or one of many other web sites selling cheap wares. Nonetheless, I still miss the flea market. Buying on-line, you have less choices. You are always taking a big risk if you buy something used, because you can not look at it. Mainly, you are limited to knock offs, generic reproductions, & the like. Nothing beats being able to barter face to face with someone, evaluating the strengths & weaknesses of a product.
